As all good things come to an end, so did the IASIMUN conference, but we should always remember and try to apply in our community all the beautiful things we learned.
Asked about the conference Madalina Secareanu told us: “I hope that they liked it as much as I did. It was a brilliant conference and not just a conference, but a dream come true.”
One of the most important things regarding the conference is the fact that during its 3 days we not only worked together, but we also had a lot of fun. In fact, moments like the “hora” at the welcome dinner, or the funny notes changed between the delegates helped us form lifelong friendships. Moreover, funny messages like: “If I want to go to the bathroom, I just go?” or “Nu mai face fite-fite” relieved the tension the delegates felt during the debates. As Maria Astefanoaei , co-chair of the environment committee told us: “ Fun, but informed and involved people really made a difference”
“Be courageous! Take the word, speak up and enjoy MUN!”
Does this advice sound familiar? It should, for these were the final comments of the MUN (Model United Nations) Secretary General, Madalina Sacareanu.
Madalina’s magnificent job in the organization and the conduction of IASIMUN brought her not only the recognition of her peers but also the appraisal of the MUN Advisor, David Pi: “She puts her heart and soul into everything she does and she embodies all the best qualities of MUN students.”
In retrospective dalliance, one could say that the odds turned to be totally in Madalina’s favor.
Remarks delivered by US Ambassador to Romania Mark Gitenstein on the Occasion of the opening ceremony of the Iasi Model UN Conference on November 28, 2009 at the Gheorghe Asachi University Festivities Hall:
Good morning to you. It is great to have the opportunity to be here with you and I’d like to start by thanking Peace Corps Volunteer David Pi and the staff of Emil Racovita National College for extending me the invitation to join you this morning.
I’d also like to thank the Prefect of Iasi, Mr. Sava Dragomir Tomaseschi, as well as Iasi county representatives of the Ministry of Education, for joining us this morning for the opening ceremony of the Iasi Model United Nations Conference.

With everyone rumoring there, anxious to get things started, the conference debuted with Mr. Pi’s friendly welcome. He introduced the Secretary General, who spoke about the importance of this event. She depicted it as being an opportunity for individual to develop, to bring a change. She ended her speech encouraging for one last time the participants: “Be brave and assume this world! Take the word, speak up, enjoy MUN!”
“It is our belief that we cannot develop, we can’t even exist, without a place to live in, without a place to makes us flourish.” Who would choose to be part of a different committee after hearing the stance of Environment Chairpeople Sinziana Astefanoaei and Catalin Toma?
How about having a closer look on the subject by interviewing the chairs from the ECOSOC Committee, Ştefana Covalciuc (also the Deputy Secretary General) and Liviu Damian?
At our question about how the delegate of Thailand can describe Russia’s delegate speech, he answered: “She should know that everything about its policy is based on sheer ignorance and manipulating the masses through religion.” This is one detail that Russia’s delegate totally forgot when she was sustaining her debate.
We are here to change the world! We are the new generation that fights for its rights and do that in a glorious way.
In the second day of IASIMUN, the Environment Committee debated the three major issues proposed and sustained by the delegates in the day before.
The first day of the IASIMUN conference in the Environment Committee began with the opening speeches of the delegates in order for everyone to understand each country’s position about the main ecological issues.
Alexandra David – Bacau, Germany: The reason why I chose to represent Germany is that I speak German and I find Germany to be a model for the other European countries considering all the presented aspects.
IASIMUN Observer: What were your expectations in your first MUN Conference?
Madalina Darabana: Well I had a lot of expectations, because my first MUN experience was at St. Petersburg and there were about 600 students all around the world starting from China to the USA…
Visiting Iaşi for the first time by your own might turn into an overwhelming experience. In order to make the city more welcoming and available for those who are not familiar with it, we will share a few tips for a short visit.
Madalina Sacareanu? George Oprea? Human Rights? Yes, that is what I am talking about, I know all of you are eager to find out about the chairpeople of the committee that they find to be of utmost importance, Human Rights.
“To care about you, when nobody else does, that’s what makes me human.”
With all these situations and conflicts on our planet, people should show that there’s humanity inside us by helping each other. In this case, countries well built, founded on good bases, and which don’t face something similar to human crisis should make a difference. Well, there are countries like that, and there really is a difference too. Countries like the US, North Korea and Iceland manage to do that.
Benefiting of the presence of numerous guests, of which probably the most striking presence is represented by the US Ambasador in Romania Mark Gitenstein, the event was remarkable through the seriousness and participants’ dedication. In addition to a general view over IASIMUN, we will focus on the work of the Human Rights Committee.
As I was standing in the Political Committee room and waiting for the debate to start, I noticed the riot and the nervousness, but I would have never guessed that silence could fill up the room so fast. Nevertheless that was just “the silence before the storm.”
“The impossible is possible”, stated Ken Goodson, director of Peace Corps Romania, giving everybody shivers up the spine. This is what this day was all about. From Mr. Ambassador, Mark Gitenstein to delegates, everybody tried hard and succeeded in raising our attention. All of us are now ready to fight to stop the fights and make the world a better place.
For the participants’ last night in Iasi, the organizers have put their sights on a contemporary art theatre play drawn from the urban culture, suggestively entitled “Made in Est”.
“The best among the best are here”, stated David Pi, English teacher and IASIMUN advisor at the “Emil Racoviţă” National College.
The first IASIMUN conference has been held at the “Emil Racoviţă” National College (CNER) due to school’s past experience in debating competitions. The school hosted an academic debating club since the beginning of its development as one of the best in Iaşi.
Honorable delegates, distinguished readers, let me introduce you to the welcome dinner held at Cavalerul Medieval for all hard-working debaters , reporters and, of course, advisers and organizers.
The Model United Conference held in Iasi couldn’t have been possible without the help of many Peace Corps volunteers who serve in different Romanian high schools.
