ECOSOC Committee

September 4th, 2009

Dear Delegates of the ECOSOC Committee,

It is our great pleasure to be your Chairpersons for the Economic and Social (ECOSOC) committee at the first IASIMUN conference. It is our belief that through MUN conferences, students are offered the chance to meet new people and see new places that might change their views on the world. Also, students can prove themselves and others that through cooperation, the world can be changed.

Stefana’s experience in MUN started in St. Petersburg, where she had the opportunity to interact with more than 600 students, from all over the world. It was there that she had the courage to speak in front of so many people, where she delivered her first “for” and “against” speeches and where she met students from as far as China for the first time!

Liviu attended the GALMUN conference, which took place in May 2009. It  was a wonderful experience in which he excelled in the ECOSOC committee.

We are looking forward to seeing you in Iasi , the place where the world will be changed…or at least we will give it our best shot to enjoy ourselves and work together for the best resolutions. Please feel free to send we an email at ecosoc@iasimun.org

Sincerely,

Stefana Covalciuc and Liviu Damian

Committee Topics

1. Prevention of software and registered brands piracy

Although there are strict international copyright regulations and policies, each day billions of pirated products reach the market to the financial detriment of their owner and the economy of the world’s countries. The UN believes that only through a joint effort of UN member states can the current situation be solved. The delegates are asked to propose viable solutions to this problem, both on short and long terms.

2. The role of women in developing democratic regimes in Muslim countries

In the last century, women of the developed countries have made major progress in gaining their rightful place in society. But still, more than 60 years since the founding of the UN, a third of the world’s countries refuse to acknowledge women and men as equals. On April 12, 2009 Sitara Achakzai, member of Kandahar’s Provincial Council who was fighting for women’s rights, was brutally murdered by Taliban gunman. The UN asks the delegates to find solutions so this kind of tragedy will never happen again.

3. Control of the manufacture of, trafficking in and abuse of synthetic drugs

By synthetic drugs we refer to the ones which are produced via chemical synthesis. For clarification, heroin, cocaine, and marijuana are in the organic category, while LSD, MDMA, and methamphetamine are synthetics. According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the worldwide number of users of amphetamine-type stimulants (ATS) is higher than the combined number of heroin and cocaine users. The UNODC further reports that the seizure of ATS drugs is second only to the worldwide seizures of cannabis (both herbal and resin form). Information reported by INTERPOL member countries confirms the widespread production and trafficking of ATS. The global emergence of synthetic drugs is a concern for all international law enforcement authorities. Therefore, delegates of IASIMUN are asked to find solutions in order to stop the synthetic drug trade to spread world-wide more than it has already done it.
