Political Committee

September 4th, 2009

Dear Delegates of the Political Committee,

We are most honored to be your Chairpersons for our committee at the first IASIMUN Conference. We truly believe that Model United Nations is an amazing opportunity for young people to discover their extraordinary potential while being socially active by searching for solutions to problems of the greatest concern for the modern world. MUN is a program that intrigues the mind and powers thought to the extent that we can all live in a civilised world. Not only that we can foster creative concepts to implement, but the exercise given through youth to help youth is ideal for a model of representation in modern-day society.

We have been involved in the MUN program at “Emil Racovita” since last year and attended the St. Petersburg MUN conference together. Radu was awarded a “Best Delegate” award as a representative of the Republic of Indonesia in the Disarmament and International Security Committee. As a delegate in the Political committee in St. Petersburg, Madalina is particularly well suited to Chair our conference’s Political committee. Radu went on to attend the Galati MUN conference where he was given 3 outstanding diplomas, representing Israel in the Human Rights Committee, Columbia at the International Court of Justice and Indonesia in the General Assembly.

We are looking forward to seeing prosperous debates from you all. If at any time you have queries regarding topics, topic management or about the event do not hesitate to contact us.

Sincerely,

Radu Valeanu and Madalina Darabana

Committee Topics

1) The situation on the Korean peninsula

North Korea (officially the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea or DPRK) claims to possess nuclear weapons. The CIA asserts that North Korea also has a substantial arsenal of chemical weapons. North Korea was a member of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty but withdrew in 2003. As North Korea continues to develop its nuclear program amidst international concern, delegates of IASIMUN are asked to propose solutions to this issue.

2) The prospect of aid in developing countries

Development aid or development cooperation is money given by governments and other agencies to support the economic, social and political development of developing countries. According to Gerbert van der Aa, for the Netherlands, only 33% of the development aid is successful, another 33% fails and of the remaining 33% the effect is unclear. In some instances, it is believed that development aid is used to fund partisans, dictators against the intention of donor countries. Delegates of IASIMUN are asked to tackled the question of how to help people in countries receiving aid without allowing funds to fall into the wrong hands or be wasted.

3) Piracy in the high seas (Arabian Gulf, Somali Coasts, Indonesian Waters)

Somali pirate attacks have recently flared up to pose a major threat to shipping off the east coast of Africa, while separate pirate attacks threaten trade in other parts of the world. The UN believes that the matter can only be solved through international cooperation. Delegates are asked to propose viable solutions to this problem, both as an immediate response to the violence, but also to identify and react to the root cause of piracy.

MUN is a program that intrigues the mind and powers thought to the extent that we can all live in a civilised world. Not only that we can foster creative concepts to implement, but the exercise given through youth to help youth is ideal for a model of representation in modern-day society.
